Chose the 2014 Grand Vitara Sport knowing that it is a true 4x4 and not those "Crossovers" or for non-4x4 enthusiasts are called "Soft-roaders." The Grand Vitara is very, very mechanically reliable and you will not have to worry so much on maintenance expenses. Great turning radius and will get you out of any terrain. Auto transmission is reasonably responsive.
If you "get it" you will know that it is a bit more thirsty on petrol but is still more practical compared to it's other 4x4 brothers such as the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Land Cruiser, Pajero or Land Rover. Don't bother finding out where the Grand Vitara stands on "Australia's Best Cars" ranking because as you know when these so-called experts conduct their review of the best AWD vehicles under $45K there is a big elephant inside the room with the marking "4x4" on the sides that they continue to ignore-- although they know that an AWD vehicle is NOT a 4x4: once they accept that you will see the results in reverse-- the Grand Vitara and the Wrangler (which is at the end of their list) will get the top spots.
My only wish list for the future models is to have a 6 speed automatic transmission instead of the current 4 speed. The rest is just PERFECT!

From my personal experience I wont go with SUV any more. choices are of course differs from person to person. Let my say about pros and cons.
Pros.
Low range gear box
SUV look with tire on back door
.... Yeah That's it..
Cons.
Boot Space is little if you compare with RAV4 or XTRAIL
Driving comforts and Dynamics are just average and below average when compared with main rivals
Really Thirsty Engine. Really costly to run. and gear box ( 4speed) oof. really disappointing.
suspicious Petrol tank with 55 or 66 liter . as most owners thinks its 55 or 50 and company claims 66 lts. but I am not sure.
Resale value is much worse than Toyota,Nissan or Honda
oops. unless you are very much into soft offroading stay away from it

Got the Grand Vitara Ltd 2011 in 2012.
I required the Ltd as the Leather seats give the interior a more luxurious feel.
The music system sounds excellant.
The engine sound is very quiet and it is a very smooth and comfortable drive.
I decided on this Grand Vitara not because of price point at all (which was cheap for a 4WD) but because comfort, size, look and quality of the drive.
I do not take mine off road but Queenstown is very hilly and has long Winters-- It is a dream to drive and also the acceleration is great joining busy roads.

Had a Forester for 250k but wanted something with low range that could tow up to 2 tonnes. Got the V6 which is quite heavy, but is more sure footed than the Forester and leaves the V6 RAV4 (which I have as a company car and is the most uncomfortable tank I've ever driven) for dead. Hard on the juice in the city, but the engine, gearbox drive and sound system are an absolute delight - I love it

Fuel usage from the 2.4l petrol is at best 15-16 l/100km! Suzuki recommend a service interval of 6 months (despite advertising 12 monthly intervals) and they are expensive
Automatic transmission is very lazy (refuses to kick down) and the change from first to second is accompanied with a huge jerk
Standard audio is complete rubbish (MP3 decoding clicks continuously at low volumes)
While the car has short comings Suzuki (we don't provide) Customer Care does not provide an email address, does not return phone calls and if you finally manage to contact them on the phone: do not provide any answers.
Wish that I had stuck with Toyota Rav4

Extremely reliable dependable servicable vehicle.Excellent off road .The interior is extremely roomy. The main reason I bought the car .I am 6feet 3 inches. The finish and the fit of body panels is of a very high standard. Having unitary con structed body plus a chassis makes the body very stiff.
